What’s Wrong With Astrology?

by Kevin B. Burk

This may seem like a strange question, especially coming from a professional astrologer, author, and teacher like me. I’ve written a dozen books (to date), including two comprehensive textbooks on how to interpret the birth chart, and I’m the Headmaster of The Real Astrology Academy. Astrology has been an integral part of my life for more than 25 years, and I know how powerful it is. And yet, as powerful as astrology is, it has some serious limitations.

Astrology promises big personal insights, but it never quite delivers on those promises.

Your birth chart is supposed to be able to answer the most important questions about your life. But no matter what approach you take, you can never quite unlock those answers.

The information you can find about your chart is either so general and impersonal that it could apply to almost anyone, or it’s so complicated and specific that you can’t do anything with it.

In other words, what’s wrong with astrology is that most astrology isn’t personal, and most personal astrology isn’t practical.

Headmaster, The Real Astrology Academy

Kevin B. Burk is the Headmaster of The Real Astrology Academy.  Burk has been counseling professionally as an astrologer since 1996, and has clients around the world. He holds an NCGR-IV Certification in Astrological Counseling, and his website, TheRealAstrology.com is one of the premiere astrology resources on the Internet. He is the author of over a dozen books, including Astrology: Understanding the Birth Chart (Llewellyn, 2001) and his latest book, Principles of Practical Natal Astrology: Talented Astrologer Training Book 1
(Serendipity Press, 2015).

Most astrology isn’t personal.

You (and your birth chart) are unique, but the popular approach to astrology suggests that you are one of twelve personality types. And no matter how well you think the qualities of your Sun sign describe you, those descriptions could apply to almost anyone.

Computer generated reports that claim to interpret your entire birth chart aren’t that personal, either. These “cookbook” type interpretations go deeper than just your Sun sign, and they address the different parts of your personality, but they don’t give you an integrated, synthesized picture.

Many people think that learning astrology is the answer. After all, you know yourself better than anyone, so who’s better qualified to interpret your chart? The problem is that astrology classes aren’t personal. The information you learn doesn't apply specifically to your chart.

The most popular way to make astrology personal is to schedule a reading with a professional astrologer. Everything about that session will be personal because it’s all based on your unique birth chart. But that brings up the next problem with astrology.

Most personal astrology isn’t practical.

Your birth chart contains a lot of information, and you have a limited amount of time with the astrologer. When I first started counseling as an astrologer, I made the same mistake that many astrologers do: I tried to give my clients as much information as possible about their charts. My clients would nod and smile, but after about 15 minutes, their eyes would glaze over because they just couldn’t process any more.

As I became more skilled as a counselor, I spent less time “reading” the chart and more time discussing it with the client, asking them questions about how they experienced it. Every time my client was able to connect the big, universal expressions of the planet to something personal in his or her life, I could practically see the light bulb turn on for them. Suddenly, they understood something small but essential about themselves. This was effective counseling, but it wasn't the astrology my clients expected because it didn't cover their entire chart.

I stopped offering astrology readings because they weren’t practical.

After more than 20 years of counseling as a professional astrologer with clients around the world, I stopped offering private astrology consultations. I know from personal experience that astrology can help you to become significantly happier than you are right now. But just learning about your chart won’t make a difference. You have to integrate that information and use it.

Improving your life and creating happiness is a process, not an event.

There's only so much you can absorb from a single consultation with an astrologer. To see any real progress, you have to commit to ongoing work, and that can get very expensive.

You could always take classes and learn how to interpret your chart on your own…but learning the language of astrology just to be able to understand your own chart is like becoming fluent in French just to order off a restaurant menu.

The solution to
these problems is Personal Practical Astrology

Personal Practical Astrology is a guided journey into your unique birth chart.

It has the benefits of ongoing, individual astrology consultations without the cost, and the advantages of an astrology class, but everything that you learn will apply specifically to you.

But most importantly, Personal Practical Astrology makes it easier for you to have those ”light bulb” moments.

Think of your life as a jigsaw puzzle.

You assemble the millions of pieces to reveal the meaning and purpose. The more pieces you fit together, the more your life makes sense and the happier you are. Some of the pieces are personal: they relate to the day-to-day experiences of your life, like your money, your relationships, your job, or your creativity. Other pieces are universal: they relate to bigger, abstract concepts like responsibility, feelings, integrity, faith, or anger.

Every time you connect a personal puzzle piece with a Universal Puzzle Piece, you have a “light bulb moment.” You flip a switch, and suddenly, you see a part of your life differently. You catch a glimpse of the truth of how you, personally fit in the universe—and that truth makes you happy.

It’s not always obvious how two puzzle pieces fit together. Sometimes you have to try lots of options to find the answer. But that’s the easy part. The hard part is finding two pieces that fit together in the first place. This is where astrology comes in. Astrology makes it possible to find a Universal Puzzle Piece and a personal puzzle piece and know in advance that they fit together so you can create a light bulb moment.

The seven inner planets are the Universal Puzzle Pieces.

The personal planets symbolize big, abstract, universal concepts that are essential parts of what make you human. The Sun represents integrity and your authentic Self. The Moon represents safety and your Emotional Guidance System. Mercury is your story and your need to understand and communicate. Venus is love and appreciation, and your Core Values. Mars is your ego and your anger. Jupiter represents growth and faith. And Saturn is responsibility and authority.

The twelve houses are the personal puzzle pieces.

The houses in the birth chart represent the different parts of your life. When a planet rules a house, the Universal Puzzle Pieces of the planet connect with the personal puzzle pieces of the house. Everyone has the same basic puzzle pieces, but how the Universal and the personal pieces connect is unique, and based on the date, time, and location of your birth.

For example, everyone has a responsibility puzzle piece. Responsibility is a universal concept, and it’s related to Saturn. The question is how responsibility connects to you, personally. Is responsibility your happiness, your money, your habits and routines, or your foundation? Is your creativity your responsibility? Is responsibility your job? Are other people your responsibility? Is responsibility your debt, your beliefs, your reputation, or your aspirations? Or is responsibility your blind spot?

At least one of these represents your personal connection to responsibility. You can find that connection in your birth chart by identifying the houses that Saturn rules in your chart. These houses represent the areas of your life where you have the most personal, direct, experience of responsibility. When you find the connection between responsibility and that part of your life, you create a light bulb moment. You will see that part of your life more clearly and understand yourself a little bit better. You will also understand responsibility better and you’ll be able to recognize it in other parts of your life and create even more light bulb moments.

At this point, you may be wondering where the signs come in, because the signs are the best-known parts of astrology. The truth may shock you.

The zodiac signs are not practical.

In the language of astrology, the signs are the adjectives and adverbs. The signs tell you how and why a planet expresses, and that’s important, useful information. But when you apply it directly to a planet, it’s not practical because it’s not personal. If you view the chart through the lens of the signs, it will never come into focus. Signs add color to the puzzle pieces, but you can't see color until you turn on the light, and the signs don't create light bulb moments.

For example, my Saturn is in Aries, a Cardinal Fire sign. Even if we consider only one expression of Saturn, like responsibility, trying to interpret Saturn in Aries is a waste of time. When you apply the adjectives and adverbs of Aries to Saturn, it means that I approach my responsibilities (Saturn) in a manner that is aggressive (Fire), passionate (Fire), initiating (Cardinal), and impulsive (Aries). I can’t do anything with that information because it’s too abstract. I don’t have a reference for where it operates in my life, so it’s not personal.

The houses are personal. They represent the specific parts of your life. The sign on the cusp of each house tells you which planet rules that house, and that’s how you find the personal connection to the planet. When a planet rules a house, it is that house.

In my chart, Saturn rules my 8th house. If we stick with responsibility for Saturn, and consider debt as one of the expressions of the 8th house, this means that my debt is my responsibility and my responsibility is my debt. For me, responsibility itself is debt. The minute I made that connection, a light bulb turned on for me. I completely understand where this idea lives in me. I take responsibility—and especially responsibility to other people—very seriously. When I make a commitment to someone, it becomes a debt. It takes on an extra layer of obligation. I know exactly where this lives in me and I can see how it’s played out for me time and again.

Now that I’ve found a personal connection to responsibility, incorporating Aries, the sign of my Saturn becomes practical. I can add the adjectives and adverbs, and it makes sense. The debt of responsibility that I experience is aggressive (Fire), passionate (Fire), initiating (Cardinal), and impulsive (Aries). Aries literally lights my responsibilities on fire. When I have a responsibility, it demands my immediate attention. I can’t put it off. The debt that I owe with that responsibility has to be repaid immediately. I have to put of the fire before I can do anything else.

I’ve always been this way, and now, for the first time, I understand why. I couldn’t see it clearly until now because the signs were getting in the way. I have been studying my own chart since 1995, and I’ve never had that kind of insight before.
